In the drawing, I have painted both my grandmother and grandfather who were visiting from Mexico when I was 5 years old. I used Blick markers and torn pieces from the original photograph to finalize the painting. I wanted to have a physical memento of grandparents since I had lost both of them at the time. Although I only got see them 3 times in my life, the moments I would share with them were beautiful and each one helped me stay connected to my Mexican roots in the way they described their home as well as in the way I was forced to speak Spanish in order to communicate with them because they didn't know English. The ripped photograph pieces stand for the puzzle pieces of memories I have of my grandparents and how some memories are more clearer than others. Despite some memories being more fuzzy or others being more lucid, I still remembered them no matter in what format, whether it be my grandpa's hat that he wore with his boots or my grandma's black pompadour haircut.
